- Aim:To provide an assessment of the efficacy and safety of Glucosamine Sulphate(GS) in the treatment of Osteoarthritis(OA) with particular reference to the relevance of these data to the osteopathic community Introduction: Increasing life expectancy means that degenerative conditions such as OA have become more prevalent, with an increasing number of patients presenting to osteopaths. Additionally, we live in a society where patients question healthcare treatment and options, often requesting professional opinions from osteopaths regarding the role of agents such as GS in the treatment of OA. Method: A computer aided literature search was conducted to retrieve all relevant articles as defined by preset explict selection criteria. The methodology of the trials was then scored by the author and a medically qualified doctor using explicit evaluation criteria; the weightings of which had been adjusted to reflect the specific circumstances of OA. Results: Nine trials were identified and seven scored over 50%, indicating reasonable methodology. Two trials scored over 80%, indicating good methodology. All nine trials showed that GS relieves the symptoms of OA.Conclusions: This systematic review demonstrated that the trials conducted were of small size and short duration, but reported effective symptom relief as compared with Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). The side effect profile of GS was excellent. However, there was little objective evaluation of the claim that GS can rebuild damaged cartilage. Further long-term, large randomised trials are needed to assess the long term efficacy and safety of GS in the treatment of OA.
