- With the Osteopaths’ Bill in 1993, and the statutory regulation of osteopaths in May 2000. Osteopathy is being brought into mainstream medicine. There is likely to be a change in the type of patients seeking help from osteopaths than those who are traditionally seen.Osteopaths and physiotherapists are compared in this study in their treatment approaches to patients who are suffering with rheumatoid arthritis. Six members of each profession were interviewed.The aim of the study is to find out whether the approaches between the two professions are similar. The objectives are to explore the treatment approaches within the two professions; to assess the similarity of the two groups’ treatment approaches; to establish a list of useful treatment modalities used by both professions and to provide possible alternative treatments for both professions.Results are represented graphically and in tabular form. The results show that there is a wide amount of disagreement between and within the two interview groups in approaches to treatment.Overall a wider variety of approaches are offered by physiotherapists although, results show a degree of similarity and agreement in the approaches used between the two groups. Similarities and differences are listed in the results.In conclusion, the results show that there is scope for both professions to learn from each other The similarities and differences produced could be used as a learning tool for both professions.
