Abstract
A large volume of research clearly demonstrates the benefits of exercise for the osteoarthritic patient. Researchers have noted both physiological and psychological benefits gained accompanied with improved quality of life and independence. There are no osteopathic published articles related to this subject and only one undergraduate study. There have been no studies on how time in practice effects consistency in advice. This study investigates whether time in practice alters the consistency in advice of exercise prescription for osteoarthritic (OA) patients. The subjects used were divided into three groups depending on year of qualification.Group 1 (4th year undergraduates), Group 2 (1999-1990), and Group 3 (1989-1979).270 questionnaires were distributed, with a return of 90. Part of the dta was analysed using the Chi-square non parametric statistical test. The remaining was analysed in percentages. The results showed that time in practice did not alter the practitioner’s consistency in advice towards exercise prescription for OA patients. The reason for this is unclear. One theory is that the subjects in this study were all trainees at the BSO and would therefore have held similar opinions.
