Abstract
Introduction/Background: Slow Transit Constipation (STC) affects a large number of people, having negative repercussions on their quality of life. Osteopathy has proved to obtain good results when treating such dysfunction, whose symptoms are frequently presented by patients seeking a consultation. The physiological relationship between the lymphatic system and the enteric neural function may be a key factor responsible for either causing STC or its prevalence when trying to keep intestinal transit steady on a regular basis. Objective/Aim: To compare the post technique changes due to the lymphatic treatment protocol effects according to the Rome III Diagnostic Criteria in patients with STC. Method (design, setting, and participants): a randomized, blind, placebo controlled clinical trial was performed among 14 people of both sexes aging between 26 and 49 years old (study group n=8 and control group n=6). Several data on defecation patterns and constipation disorder were collected before and after performing both the lymphatic treatment protocol and the placebo procedure. Results: Neither significant changes in defecatory patterns nor significant differences as refers to remission, improvement or response affecting the constipation dysfunction were detected between the study group and the control group. The defecation frequency increases under osteopathic treatment as much as it does with the placebo technique. Conclusions: the lymphatic treatment protocol has no effects in patients with STC disorder.
