Abstract
Objective: Assessment of psychosocial working conditions, health and well-being of German osteopaths.
Study design: Cross-sectional study.
Method: 147 osteopaths (60 male and 86 female; one participant did not provide information) selected from registered osteopaths in Germany (German Osteopathic Association; VOD) participated in this evaluation. Via online-survey the participants completed the screening instrument COPSOQ (Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire). The COPSOQ has been developed in Denmark and deals with the broadness respectively indefiniteness of the construct “psychosocial factors in working life” by applying a multidimensional approach with a wide spectrum of certain aspects by several international tested scales. A validated German version is available. Three superior scales (demands, influence and development, and interpersonal relations and leadership) include 4 – 9 specific subscales. Additionally the questionnaire was completed by characteristics typical for the osteopathic profession (organizational, social, and economical conditions).
Results: Participating osteopaths worked predominantly self-employed (95%). The analysis of the three superior COPSOQ scales in this sample revealed the following mean values: for the scale “demands” in the lower half of the assessment range (36.5 to 52.5 points out of 100; low = positive), for the scale “influence and development” in the superior third (76 to 91 points out of 100; high = positive), and for the scale “interpersonal relations and leadership” the mean values were distributed widely (33 to 91 points out of 100; high = positive). On the basis of calculating strain (effects and outcomes) a high job satisfaction (mean = 83 out of 100 points), a high general health (mean = 79 out of 100 points), a high general satisfaction with life (mean = 78 out of 100 points), and a low cognitive stress (mean = 26 out of 100 points) was detected. Only the scale “presenteeism” showed a quite low level with a mean value of 22 out of 100 points (high = positive). In comparison to other health-care professions especially the lower quantitative professional demand and the associated lower pressure on time and performance as well as a high influence on work was evident.
Conclusions: The results of this cross-sectional study showed especially in comparison to other health-care professions a rather low psychosocial working strain of osteopaths in Germany. Based on sample size and formation it could not be assumed that these results are representative for the complete occupational group in Germany.
