[_H2_]Study Design[_/H2_]
[_P_]Randomized controlled clinical pilot study[_/P_]
[_H2_]Outline/Problem Definition[_/H2_]
[_P_]Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic disease with an onset in early childhood. Due to its chronic course it has a negative effect on the physical, mental and social development of the affected children and adolescent.[_/P_]
[_H2_]Research Question & Objective[_/H2_]
[_P_]Can an osteopathic treatment carried out in addition to the established treatment methods produce a positive change in the course of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) measured with regard to the health-related quality of life, perception of pain and inflammation activity?[_/P_]
[_H2_]Hypothesis[_/H2_]
[_P_]Hypothesis 1:
H0: Osteopathy has no effect for JIA patients with regard to the health-related quality of life.
H1: Osteopathy has an effect for JIA patients with regard to the health-related quality of life.
Hypothesis 2:
H0: Osteopathy has no effect for JIA patients with regard to the perception of pain.
H1: Osteopathy has an effect for JIA patients with regard to the perception of pain.
Hypothesis 3:
H0: Osteopathy has no effect for JIA patients with regard to the inflammation activity (lab parameters).
H1: Osteopathy has an effect for JIA patients with regard to the inflammation activity (lab parameters).
[_/P_]
[_H2_]Methodology[_/H2_]
[_P_]Study design: randomized controlled clinical pilot study
Patients: 24 children and adolescents with JIA (20 girls and 4 boys) between 6 and 18 years of age.
Procedure: The patients are randomized into an experimental group (n=12) and a control group (n=12). The patients of the experimental group received three osteopathic treatments (black box) within a period of three months. The following parameters were measured: health-related quality of life (Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire and Childhood Health Questionnaire ? PF50), perceived pain (Faces Pain Scale ? Revised) and inflammation activity (lab parameters).
[_/P_]
[_H2_]Results[_/H2_]
[_P_]A significant change could be observed in the experimental group in the mental aspects of the health-related quality of life regarding the variables [_/P_]
[_H2_]Critical Reflection/Perspectives/Conclusions[_/H2_]
[_P_]Only few osteopathic studies involving adult rheumatoid patients are published. This pilot study is the first paper on this topic focusing on children and adolescents. The results of this study indicate that an osteopathic treatment can contribute to improvements in the progression of JIA. More detailed follow-up studies on this topic would be desirable.[_/P_]
