This research project is a qualitative social study which examines the process of re-orientating a practice’s therapeutic offer from physiotherapy to osteopathy; it also analyzes the problems therapists in Germany encounter in this process. The main difficulty that arises in this context is that there are no legal definitions of ‘osteopathy’ or the profession ‘osteopath’ in contrast to physiotherapy/physiotherapists; thus a physiotherapist who works osteopathically is enjoined by court decision to refrain from using techniques which are not covered by the professional profile of physiotherapy.
The study involves six interviews of therapists who explain how they are re-organizing or have re-organized their practices and what problems they encountered. Based on several theoretic resources six assumptions were established, which served as background for the questions. They refer to both legal and economic aspects and also to the individual relationships between therapists and doctors, on the one hand, and therapists and patients, on the other hand. In addition, the professional identity of the therapist and the influence of the general public’s degree of awareness regarding osteopathy are examined. The interviewees were also given the possibility to describe their own experiences and put forward additional aspects. - Abstract

Bei dieser Arbeit handelt es sich um eine qualitative Sozialstudie. Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, ob der Übergang des Therapieangebotes von Physiotherapie auf Osteopathie bei den betroffenen Therapeuten in Deutschland mit Problemen verbunden ist. Bedeutsam dabei ist, dass für Osteopathie im Gegensatz zur Physiotherapie kein gesetzlich definiertes Berufsbild existiert. Das hat zur Folge, das die Ausübung der Osteopathie in Deutschland die Therapeuten vor besondere Schwierigkeiten stellt, wie im Ergebnisteil dann auch sichtbar wird. Ein aktuelles Gerichtsurteil verbietet dem selbstständigen osteopathisch tätigen Therapeuten sogar Techniken anzuwenden, die nicht über das Berufsbild des Physiotherapeuten gedeckt sind.
In sechs Interviews werden Therapeuten befragt, wie sie diesen Umstellungsprozess gestalten bzw. gestaltet haben und mit welchen Problemen sie dabei konfrontiert worden sind. Vorab sind unter Bezugnahme auf theoretische Quellen hierzu sechs Vorannahmen erstellt worden, die den Hintergrund für die Fragen bilden. Diese beziehen sich sowohl auf rechtliche und wirtschaftliche Aspekte als auch auf die jeweiligen Beziehungen des Therapeuten zum Arzt einerseits und zum Patienten andererseits. Auch die Berufsidentität des Therapeuten sowie der Einfluss des Bekanntheitsgrades der Osteopathie in der Öffentlichkeit werden hinterfragt. Gleichzeitig wird den Interviewpartnern aber Raum gelassen, eigene Erfahrungen und weitere Aspekte dazu aufzuzeigen, die in einem separaten Kapitel zusammengefasst werden und als Anregungen für weitere Nachforschungen dienen können. - presented at
