1. Background
Reasons that lead to my decision to conduct a study on the treatment of SOM include the wish of many parents to obtain alternative treatment for their children and the possibility to cooperate with an ENT specialist for carrying out tympanometry.
2. Patients
Ten children of a defined group with bilaterally flat tympanograms were treated four times applying osteopathic methods while a control group of children with the the same pathology received conventional treatment with antibiotics. In the final examination, tympanometry was used to objectively assess improvement of the patient’s condition and to compare the result of the two groups.
3. Results
The results obtained from both groups are presented in form of a graph for better comparison. The condition of both groups improved. A statistically relevant result cannot be expected due to the small number of test persons.
4. Conclusion
Osteopathic treatment did not only improve hearing but also had a positive effect on the children’s general health. This allows the conclusion that osteopathic therapy with its holistic approach is indicated for the treatment of SOM and represents a viable alternative for parents who are concerned over the administration of antibiotics. - Abstract
