- Abstract
- Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition which is evaluated by studies in regards to pain development, treatment, symptoms and causes but not as much in regards to its prevention. If it can be established which factors tend to increase the risk of OA, in return, it could help to prevent it in the first place. Sitting seems to be a position which people tend to be in more and more due to different factors such as occupation or lifestyle. Objective: As there is an inconsistency in the literature regarding the relationship between sitting as a posture and its contributing factor to OA, the aforementioned research question has been formulated. Design: A structured literature review. Methods: A total number of 5,845 initial studies were found within the month of October in 2018 using keywords in association with the Boolean logic in 6 different databases. Only 6 studies met all the inclusion criteria and were used for this study while the other 5,839 studies were eliminated due to the exclusion criteria. Results: In total, a final number of 6 studies were proven against the Downs&Black score and CEBM levels to evaluate their quality. It varied greatly with each article and scale. In addition to this, there was a great variety of results regarding the outcome of the research. Some articles referred to a decreased OA risk with increasing time spent sitting, while other articles stated that sitting time would increase symptomatic OA of the knee. Most articles did not specify between sitting and general sedentary behaviour. Discussion: During the evaluation of the studies, it could be established that different factors play a role regarding hip and knee OA which are not all evaluated yet with the current available literature. Muscle strength and general physical activity (PA) stand in contrast to sedentary behaviour and sitting. Conclusion: Despite the lack of specificity regarding sitting as a posture, it can be stated that in contrast, higher PA levels lead to a decreased risk of having a contributing factor towards developing knee and hip OA. Current literature is not providing enough information about the specific outcome of sitting and needs to be further established.
