- Background: Tiredness is a poorly understood phenomenon by health professionals, usually described as lack of energy, physical or emotional exhaustion with the suggestion that tiredness, fatigue and exhaustion represent various points on an energy continuum. lt has been indicated that osteopathic treatment could potentially cause transient tiredness which resolves within the next 48 hours despite the suggestion by other studies thai tiredness can be treated with an osteopathy approach. Objectives: The study explored the level and dimension of tiredness and fatigue before and after osteopathic manual treatment to investigate some of the main influencing factors. Design : Questionnaire study. Methods: Four 10-point questionnaires were handed out in the student clinic of the ESO to all new patients who completed them at 4 time points pre-and post-intervention. Collected answers were statistically evaluated using SPSS software package using a variety of parametric and non-parametric tests to analyse the differences and correlations between data sets. Results: 94 New Patients at the ESO clinic were handed questionnaires and 49 were returned with response rate of 52 %. The age of respondents ranged between 26 - 70+ yrs. The ratio of males to females was approximately 60:40. Treatments occurred mostly in the afternoon. Most commonly treatments involved articulation. ln general patients showed a trend of decreasing level of tiredness/fatigue following treatment and relative to pre-treatment levels. This was statistically significant for 2 of the 6 related questions. lnfluencing factors such as gender, age and time of treatment were not statistically significant. Discussion: The extent of research and investigation of the phenomenon of tiredness/fatigue in osteopathy is limited and poorly reviewed and there is a lack of current comparative data for this study. While some studies suggest that osteopathic treatment can cause tiredness/fatigue as an AE of treatment, other research seems to indicate that osteopathic treatment is recommended to decrease the level of tiredness/fatigue. Conclusion: New patients which have received treatment at the ESO clinic carried out by 3rd and 4th year students, felt healthier and more energetic 48 hrs after treatment than before intervention. The visual analysis of graphs regarding feeling sleepy or fatigued suggests decrease in intensity of symptoms however results are not supported by statistical significance possibly due to the type ll error therefore results are inconclusive.
