Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of injuries and treatment sustained and sought respectively by professional lrish dancers in order to evaluate the role of osteopathy in this genre of dance. Methods: This study is a cross sectional questionnaire of professional lrish dancers aged 18 years and over. Participants were invited to participate in the questionnaire study through a public link on An Coimisi0n Le Rinci Gaelacha's website, via email and social media including 'Facebook' and 'Twitter' with the details of the study attached. The questionnaire aimed to collect the following data; demographic information, types of injury and recovery time, treatment modalities, the current understanding of osteopathy in the lrish dancing population and the likelihood of a dancer choosing osteopathic treatment in the future and why. The data were collected in SurveyGizmo and exported to Microsoft Excel where the responses were analysed using Analyse lT (Chi square and Fisher exact tests) and also qualitatively. Results: Questionnaire response rate totalled 109, with 69 completed questionnaires. Moderate to very Severe ankle injuries were the most reported injuries with participants indicating Accident & Emergency (A&E) as their primary treatment modality for ankle injuries with a probability of 0.57 (p=0.57) and a Power value equalling 0.95 (P=0.95). The results suggest that treatment was sought in A&E for the worst injuries dancers sustained with a probability of 0.41 (p=0.41) and a Power value equalling 0.82 (P=0.82). Thematic analysis showed a lack of understanding regarding osteopathy and how it may be beneficial in injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in this dance genre. Discussion: Research into injuries and treatment seeking behaviour of professional lrish dancers is limited containing conflicting opinions and inadequate sampling of the population. Additionally, there is currently no research into osteopathy and its benefits to the lrish dancing population. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated a lack of understanding of osteopathy in this population and has highlighted the need for more research into lrish dancing injuries and the role of osteopathy. The possibility of educating this population has been identified and future research into defining injury and pain in lrish dance may be beneficial.
