Abstract
We can define constipation as defecation frequency decreased or an increased defecation effort. In Spain, the prevalence is 29.5% and it is 2 times more common in women than in men 2:1. This study sought to establish whether the GOT would be a good therapeutic option for the constipation treatment and if using the GOT for other purposes and problems can be influencing bowel function of patients diagnosed with constipation. Therefore, it is presented the hypothesis that the approach to a patient with constipation by global osteopathic techniques involve an improving of the patient symptoms and their defecation frequency by a restoration of its internal environment and patient bowel habit arises .
Method: Longitudinal study of 8 weeks duration, with 26 patients randomly divided into two groups of 13. The case group received 4 treatments of GOT in intervals of one week, while with the control group an expectant observation was made. For the data extraction was used a calendar of the 15 days before and after the treatment period, which both groups had to fill out at the same time and the PAC--- SYM questionnaire, which they also had to fill out at the same time before and after the treatment period.
Results: After the treatment period we observe a significant improvement (p < 0.005) of the group in both defecation frequency (2.0 points on average ) and reduction of symptoms (7.46 points average). The mean difference scores for each test parameter improved after treatment, being particularly significant in the consistency and size of stool and in the decreased straining during bowel movements and abdominal pain.
Conclusions: Based on the obtained results, we can conclude that patients diagnosed with chronic constipation could improve after a treatment with GOT. Therefore, it could be a valid option in order to treat this disease to be included within the usual treatment of constipation.
