Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVESThe technique of decompression of the spheno-basilar joint (SEB) may have beneficial
effects on blood pressure control, but has not previously been tested. The objective of this
study is to describe a pilot assessing blood pressure levels in response to this technique in a
patient with arterial hypertension.
MATERIAL AND METHODOLOGY
The evolution after the application of the technique of SEB decompression in a 42 years old
man in 6 different sessions, held between March 10th, 2013 and May 30th, 2014, is
described. This is a patient with high blood pressure without other cardiovascular risk factors
(no smoking or diabetes mellitus). The HBP had 1 year of evolution and the patient was not
in medical or dietary treatment.
Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) were recorded before applying the
technique, immediately at the end, five minutes later and one hour later.
RESULTS
After applying the SEB decompression technique, the patient had immediately an average
decrease of SBP figures of 7 ± 5.74 mmHg and DBP of 5 ± 3.1 mmHg; after 5 minutes the
decrease from the baseline was 2.3 ± 3.1 and 5.5 ± 3.1 mmHg, respectively; after one hour
the average decrease from the baseline was 3.2 ± 3.71 and 5 ± 4.6mm Hg respectively. Only
in two sessions there was no sustained decrease in SBP and DBP appreciated.
CONCLUSIONS
The SEB decompression technique could be used in the control of blood pressure. The data
obtained in the present case pose this possibility, since in 4 of the 6 sessions the patient had
a sustained decrease in SBP and DBP when handling. This finding raises a starting point for
a prospective study evaluating the efficacy and safety of this technique in the osteopathic
treatment of high blood pressure.

La técnica de descompresión de la articulación esfeno-basilar (SEB) podría tener efectos
beneficiosos en el control de la tensión arterial, pero no ha sido testada previamente. El
objetivo de este estudio es describir una experiencia piloto evaluando las cifras de tensión
arterial en respuesta a esta técnica en un paciente con hipertensión arterial (HTA) grado I.
MATERIAL Y METODOLOGIA
Se describe la evolución tras la aplicación de la técnica de descompresión de la SEB en un
hombre de 42 años en 6 sesiones diferentes realizadas entre el 10 de marzo de 2013 al 30
de mayo de 2014. Se trata de un paciente con HTA de 1 año de evolución sin otros factores
de riesgo cardiovascular (no tabaquismo ni diabetes mellitus) .Se registraron las cifras de
tensión arterial sistólica (TAS) y diastólica (TAD) antes de aplicar la técnica de
descompresión de la SEB, inmediatamente al finalizar la técnica, a los cinco minutos y una
hora después.
RESULTADOS
Tras aplicar la técnica de descompresión SEB, el paciente presentó una media de
disminución de cifras de TAS de 7± 5.74 mmHg y de TAD de 5 ± 3.1 mmHg de forma
inmediata; a los 5 minutos la disminución respecto de la situación inicial fue de 2.3 ± 3.1 y
5.5 ± 5.25 mmHg respectivamente; a la hora la media de la disminución respecto a la
situación inicial fue 3.2 ± 3.71 y 5 ± 4.6 mmHg respectivamente. Únicamente en dos
sesiones no se apreció una disminución mantenida de ambas tensiones TAS y TAD.
CONCLUSIONES
La técnica de descompresión de la SEB podría tener aplicación en el control de la tensión
arterial. Los datos obtenidos en el caso presentado, plantean esta posibilidad, ya que en 4
de las 6 sesiones el paciente presentó una disminución mantenida de la TAS y TAD a la
hora. Este hallazgo plantea un punto de partida para un estudio prospectivo evaluando la
eficacia y seguridad de esta técnica en el tratamiento osteopático de la HTA.
