Abstract
Introduction This review examines efficacy of Osteopathic manual therapy (OMT) versus non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as a treatment approach for non-specific low back pain (NSLBP). It also includes literature that investigates the effect of other types of therapy, such as acupuncture, massage, mobilization, standard care, physical therapy and exercise. The overall aim was to see if any established difference between therapies in terms of efficacy existed. Methods To establish the efficacy and therefore support for the recommendation of a treatments use for NSLBP the Strength of Recommendation axonomy (SORT) was used. Results/analysis Findings from this review found that evidence for the recommendation for therapeutic treatment of NSLBP was generally limited in quality and lacking in consistency. Discussion This being the case, it was established that SMT appears to be equal in efficacy to standard care for NSLBP, although its effectiveness versus sham treatment remains unproven. Conclusion from this review it is unclear whether OMT versus NSAIDs as a treatment approach has a significant effect on NSLBP. A greater amount of research specifically into the field of OMT is needed to better establish its efficacy on NSLBP
