Abstract
Title Why do patients attend osteopathic practices in circumstances where treatment at a National Health Service (NHS) practice is available? Introduction: There are many new changes occurring in the NHS currently which have shifted the selection and provision of services in each area into the hands of the GP’s within the Clinical Commissioning Groups. There is now the potential for Osteopathy to be given greater consideration as a primary or secondary healthcare route. This study looks into reasons why patients currently choose to attend the E.S.O clinic over the NHS services available. Method: A qualitative study was carried out. Semi structured interviews were used to gather data, audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed. Participants were recruited via convenience sampling. The data was analysed and interpreted using a form of coded thematic framework. Key words: “NHS” “Osteopathy” “CCG’s” “NHS constitution” “Patient satisfaction” Results: There were 4 main themes that appeared: Effectiveness of Treatment, Efficiency of the process/pathway, Environment and Patient Experience with 15 subthemes which are: effectiveness, credibility of treatment, recommendation, options available, patient education, efficiency, affordability, control, comforting environment, waiting times, bureaucracy, location, treatment approach, prescription approach(DRUGS), GP awareness. The themes found from the data interact with one other to express the experiences patients have had within both the NHS and the E.S.O clinic. Environment, Efficiency..., Effectiveness of treatment all contribute towards the Patient Experience with environment being the “way in” to each healthcare route. Discussion: The study highlighted a range of patient experiences that had lead up to patients choosing the E.S.O clinic over the NHS services available . The findings were compared to published literature. Patients raised the factors that were important to making their decision of which healthcare route to take regarding their musculoskeletal complaints. As well as what they liked about the treatment they received and what they would do in the future. Negative opinions arose regarding NHS waiting times and time taken for referrals to be made. Conclusion: To conclude it is suggested that more research into patient preference regarding available healthcare routes and patient satisfaction of treatments provided. The findings of this study create the potential basis for self-assessment for any healthcare providers a valuable tool for the application of AQP status.
