Abstract
Title “The importance of clinic physical experience to patient satisfaction and treatment experience”. Aims This study aims to explore any potential relationships and perceptions that the patients might have towards an osteopathic clinic environment both on a physical and psychosocial level. This is to achieve a further understanding as to how to create the “ideal” patient-centred environment. This investigation also intends to research whether specific aspects of the clinic room environment have any effect on treatment outcomes, and if it could affect the recovery process. Design and Methodology A phenomenological approach was used, applying focus groups in order to explore the research question. The data was transcribed and the concepts within the data thematically coded. Open coding was used to break down the data from the transcripts, and then put into categories and sub-categories. Axial-coding was then used to identify any potential connections between the categories and sub-categories. Selective coding was used in the final stage of the process to recognize previously identified key codes or themes. A validity check was performed by using the Investigator Triangulation method. Results and Discussion The were eight emergent core themes extracted from the narratives, some of them overlapping: Patient’s preferences in choosing a clinic. Pain and clinical environment. The importance of the physical environment in a clinic. The importance of a psycho-social environment. Expectations and costs. Complaining about the interior of a clinic. Definition of the word “atmosphere”. Definition of the word “Professionalism”.Conclusion The main conclusion to take away from this study is that according to the narratives, the physical environment comes second to a professional practitioner. As part of the patient experience of going to the osteopath, the patients universally agreed that a positive outcome of the treatment, (pain relief), was significantly more important. However, the importance of the physical environment must not be overlooked, as research has proved that it could affect the emotional state of the patient in both positive and negative ways. The patients stated on their “wish list” a desire for a “homely” feel within the clinical environment. This could be important for osteopaths to bear in mind when designing or redesigning their clinics in the future.
