Abstract
Title The Effects of Hydration on Pain Perception Objective The objective of the study design was to investigate the effect of water on the pressure pain threshold. Along side this drinking habits and ways of assessing hydration levels in the body was also researched to try and have a more global understanding of water and health. Study Design A randomized controlled study into the effect of hydration on pain perception. Method The study was conducted on 40 students picked at random from the European School of Osteopathy. 20 for the control group and 20 intervention group that received 500ml of water. Participant refrained from drinking any liquids Three hours prior to the experiment. The intervention consisted of drinking 500ml of water for the treatment group, whereas the control group received nothing. Pressure pain thresholds (PPT) were measured three times pre and post intervention and analysed at a later date to measure any changes. Shapiro-Wilks test was used to analise distribution, and Wilcoxon and Man-Whitney U were used for comparison of the mean. Iv Results Data analysis revealed a significant difference in the PPT between the control group and the intervention group (p=0.00). The null Hypothesis was rejected. “there is no significant difference in the pressure pain threshold with the consumption of 500ml of natural spring water”. Conclusion The null hypothesis was rejected as a statistical analysis showed there was a significant difference between the intervention and control groups (p=0.00); water appeared to have a comparative affect on the pressure pain threshold. Literature states that it is not possible to ascertain the exact levels of hydration or the mechanism as to how this can effect pressure pain thresholds. Further research in this field is encouraged.
