Abstract
The aim of this retrospective study was to research and try to make a correlation between the different birth processes, the presentation of common symptoms, the recurrent diagnoses and the number of treatments received by babies at the European School Of Osteopathy teaching clinic with a glance at the influence of the tutors on the students.113 files were analysed, randomly selected from the ESQ Children teaching clinic database between 2012 and 2013. The only condition was for the baby to be under 6 months old at the time of the initial consultation. The comparison between normal vaginal birth, ventouse, forceps, induced, elective and emergency caesareans was made using an online questionnaire on skydrive completed by the conductor of this study. An investigation of the current literature was done to explain the different birth processes and the effects on the babies possibly causing an altered structure and function. Information about the influence and consequences of tutoring on the students was researched but not sufficient to come to a relevant conclusion. The database used were the ESO library, Maidstone undergraduate projects, the internet, PubMed and the Greenwich library. The main symptoms were colicky presentations such as unsettledness, reflux, trouble winding and colic. Membranous tension as well as compression and torsion of the cranium were the most recurrent diagnoses. In cases where the delivery was complicated (increased duration, medically assisted delivery), a greater number of treatments seemed to be related to harder deliveries. The results showed no correlation between the presentation of the symptoms and the birth process even though some association could be made. Statistical significance was found between the diagnosis of membranous tension and the delivery through vacuum extraction and forceps. However, no further correlation was made between the other diagnoses and the birth process. There was correlation found between the number of treatments and the type of birth.
