- Abstract
- This review examines the possible changes to society which may cause increasing prevalence of sleep deprivation. It also reviews the current literature on the effects of sleep deprivation upon health. The overall aim is to identify whether sleep deprivation should be of more significant consideration within osteopathic management and treatment. Findings from this review found that sleep deprivation does affect both short and long term health. The symptoms of sleep deprivation may be observable in patients, and confirmed in consultation and case history taking. It is hope that this review will give some guidance to Osteopaths, amongst other manual therapists, in order to understand when referral may be necessary or when a patient may need further management aside from physical treatment. From this review, it is unclear whether osteopathic treatment directly affects or improves sleep deprivation. Further study is needed with regards to the effects of manual therapy upon sleep deprivation
