Abstract
Objectives Over the last decade, many studies have established how psychosocial issues can become risk factors associated with chronic pain and disability The aims of the present study are to investigate the attitudes and beliefs current ESQ students have towards psychosocial risk factors and how these shape their management in clinical practice. Method This qualitative study used a semi structured Interview format using a convenience sampling. Two one-to-one pilot interviews were conducted primarily to ratify the original topic guide. This was followed by two focus groups with 3'd and 4th year ESQ students. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and results were coded into themes and analysed using framework analysis. Quotes were used anonymously in this study. Results Awareness of psychosocial issues was high amongst 41h year students but relatively low amongst 3'd year students. Levels of awareness were relative to the amount of exposure to the theoretical concept but also clinical experience. No specific screening method was used in the clinic setting which was a concern to most 4lh year students. Management of psychosocial risk factors could potentially present challenges to the students who did not always feel well equipped to deal with such issues. Despite this, students reported the adoption of a patient centred approach. Conclusion Although specific guidelines and countless questionnaires are available to practitioners, the results agree with recent research identifying a lack of adherence (in primary care) to procedures with regards to psychosocial risk factors. At the ESQ clinic, identification of Yellow Flags is mostly dependent on subjective factors such as the influence of the tutors and students' personal bias.
