Abstract
Objective: A non-cross over, double-blind study explored the proposed neuro-mechanical relationship between visceral lesion and cervical spine passive rotation in 52 subjects. The proposed relationship between indirect-diaphragm contact and cervical spine rotation was tested using subject self-touch with additional pressure. Methods: Subjects were recruited using word-of-mouth and divided into a _Test' and Control' group. Subjects with existing vertebral restrictions between C3 and C5 were assigned to the test group. Those with no apparent restriction were assigned to the control group. Both groups followed the same protocol. Subjects, lying supine, contacted their skin anteriorly from T5-dermatome (superiorly) to T12 dermatome (inferiorly). A two-pound weight was added for additional increased pressure. Cervical rotation was tested before and after the intervention. Results: Touch caused increases and decreases of cervical rotation in both groups (+10.40 to -3.30, SD 12.80 to 13.9o). Where an increase in cervical rotation was observed it occurred generally when touch was contra'-lateral to cervical restriction. However increase in rotation was not significant in either groups (p=().418). Conclusion: Due to identified flaws reliability of results is poor. A hypothesised explanation of the correlation between touch variance of cervical rotation has been proposed Consequently no conclusions can yet be drawn. Suggestions regarding further research are made.
