- Introduction_Stress is a common condition affecting undergraduate students and can have a detrimental effect on health and academic performance. In the UK there is not much guidance on how to manage stress in tertiary education and standard management generally includes counselling or referral to the general practitioner in severe cases. There has been an increase in the use of complementary alternative medicine as an alternative to standard management but no study has looked into the effects of osteopathy in the cranial field for the management of stress in tertiary education. Methods_This study used a prospective A-B-A single system research design consisting of four weeks baseline data three weeks intervention and three weeks of data gathering when treatment was removed. Treatment included standard cranial osteopathic techniques and the outcomes were recorded using two standardised and validated questionnaires. Results_Despite the fact that this study revealed a decrease trend in severity of symptoms of Discussion Although there was a reduction in the severity of symptoms there were errors in the methodology that may have invalidated the results of this study. Due to time constraints there was a likelihood of an unstable has baseline data and the choice of the experimental procedure was not optimal. Conclusion The results of this study show that osteopathy in the cranial field may produce a decrease in the severity of symptoms of stress and anxiety experienced by undergraduate students. Although the results are not statistically significant the reduction in symptoms, during the treatment phase, warrants further research using appropriate methodologies.
