Abstract
Introduction: In light of the recent paradigm, addiction is nowadays regarded as a chronic relapsing disease, involving complex bio-psycho-social processes. Despite this, addicted people are often disregarded by the society. Treatment options are improving but there is still a limited range available to the public. The high prevalence of addiction to opioids, within patients undergoing pain management, makes the subject particularly relevant to osteopaths. In fad, addicted patients may turn up to practices, in which case practitioners should be able to manage appropriately the condition of their patient. In addition, recent evidence, tend to support that osteopathic treatment may also provide a meaningful tool when addressing the detoxification of opioid addicts. The following review will attempt to expose most aspects of opioid addiction, in order for the reader to gain a broad overlook of the topic. It is hoped the outcome of this review will arm the clinician with an increased sense of guidance, combining a contemporary evidence based approach with the benefits and limitations that different method of opioid addiction management offer. Method: The following review of the literature will primarily consist of references from peer reviewed articles that have been published within the last 10 years. A number of databases were searched, including: Science direct; Pubmed, SwetsWise, Cochrane and NHS, WHO and GOsC evidence. Key terms searched included: Manual Therapy; Endorphins, Physical Therapy; Osteopathy; Osteopath; Manipulative treatment; massage therapy, opioid, endogenous opioid, holistic treatment, addiction, dependency, massage, withdrawal reward Books published on physiology, rehabilitation and addiction will also be utilized for reference. Results: Number of aspects of opioid addiction is showing to be relevant to osteopaths. In fact, along with their potential therapeutic abilities, osteopaths, as health practitioners, have the duty to diagnose, inform, communicate are refer patients when it is appropriated. Because of the prevalence of oioid addicts among patients managed for pain with opioid medication, osteopaths may come across patterns of addiction in their practice lifetime Conclusion: Very little research has been conducted so far to explore the effect of osteopathic treatment on addiction. Further studies must be conducted in order to define the extent at which osteopathy may benefit to the treatment of addiction.
