Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to expand the existing literature base of intra-rater palpation studies with a focus on reliability. Emphasis is placed on replicable study design and suitable statistical methods. Methods: A double blind longitudinal study was used to test the reliability of palpation in three final year osteopathic students enrolled at the European School of Osteopathy. Raters palpated three students from within the same cohort following specific instructions. Randomisation procedures were used. Interval data was analysed using the intraclass correlation coefficient and reported with a 95% confidence interval (CI). The Landis and Koch scale was used to qualitatively benchmark data Hypothesis was tested using One-Way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests for parametric and non.parametric data respectively. Results: No significant association was found between raters and subjects (5.841; p=0.857). Mean palpation distances ranged from 1.21-23.62mm for rater I ; 0.30-21.O5mm for rater 2 and 2.72-20.23mm for rater 3. Mean intra-rater reliability ranged from low (rater 3) to moderate (raters I and 2) using the ICC benchmark scale. The null hypothesis was not rejected, although power testing indicated a high chance of committing a type II error (left PSIS, 94%; right PSIS, 93% and left and right PSIS together 95%). Conclusion: Considering results indicate low to moderate intra-rater reliability, this study recommends cautious presentation of palpation in osteopathic curricula. Suggestions for future research are made.
