Abstract
Objective: To investigate lay members of the publics' understanding of osteopathy, including; general field of expertise, treatment style, conditions treated, and patient types treated. Methods: During 2010 a questionnaire survey was available for completion online by members of the UK public with no previous medical training to determine both whether the respondent had heard of osteopathy and whether that person had any more of an understanding of osteopathy. Results: 188 responses were collected and analysed; 77.7% had heard of osteopathy and those of a higher socioeconomic group had a significantly greater understanding of osteopathy. On further analysis there were also significant differences when analysing higher education level and sex (F>M) these categories were linked to significantly higher scores and thus a greater understanding of osteopathy. Conclusions: Socioeconomic grouping does affect understanding of osteopathy.
