Abstract
Background aims and objectives: The patient'practitionerrelationship is important -within the orthodox and alternative medicine health care system. This project investigated the patient-practitioner relationship and patient disclosure of information within the European School of Osteopathy teaching clinic and whether it was dependent on age, gender and ethnicity. Looking at previous research there appears to be more focus in the orthodox field and information on the honesty of general practitioners and nurses. Methodology: The present author designed a questionnaire, two hundred of which were distributed to the European School of Osteopathy teaching clinic to elicit information about disclosure of information. A stamped addressed envelope was attached for return of questionnaires on their completion. Results and discussion: Results were obtained from 158 participants and both descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was conducted. Descriptive statistics showed gender differences determined disclosure of information and also patients find it harder to disclose information to non-UK student practitioners. Inferential statistics using the chi-squared test were mostly invalid, predominantly due to a low response rate, stemming from a small sample size Conclusions: The majority of respondents (84%) were honest with their student practitioner and this was not dependent on personality or age. Female patients preferred female practitioners and it was significant that patients at the ESO teaching clinic find it harder to disclose information to European (non UK students).
