- Abstract
- Emotional trauma ranges from a mild reaction to a traumatic event to chronic Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and depends partly on the perception of the event(s) concerned This can lead to physical symptoms unrelated to any actual physical trauma, and awareness of this (and other aspects of emotional trauma) is needed to manage and treat patients optimally in clinical practice. The purpose of this research is twofold: 1). to critically evaluate the current state of knowledge regarding emotional trauma and its manifestation in the physical body, and 2). to explore some of the methods used to treat emotional trauma and evaluate the evidence for their efficacy, in order to make informed choices in the management of patients. This dissertation is a literature review of research articles published mainly in peer-reviewed journals, with reference to other journal articles and books where required
