Abstract
Manual therapies are ever increasingly used to help treat many different complaints, but mainly musculoskeletal problems. Many claims have been made that manual therapists profess to treat more than evidence indicates to be true. However, this is often countered with theoretical arguments that this is due to an incompatibility between the therapy and the research approach that would provide _evidence.' Over the last 20 years, evidence-based medicine (EBM) has taken hold of the modem Western medical profession, and is now becoming the main focus for allocating funding, choosing services, and validating treatments throughout healthcare within the UK. This dissertation will mainly look at peer-reviewed journal based articles on manual therapy research, with key words including; chiropractic treatment, chiropractor, evidence-based practice, osteopathic treatment, osteopathy, patient satisfaction, physiotherapy, physical therapy, evidence-based guidelines, complementary medicine, alternative medicine, spinal manipulation, evidence-based medicine,cranio-sacral therapy, cranial osteopathy, and evidence-based healthcare, using Boolean logic. The author will try to use peer-reviewed articles published after 2000, but may need to look back further, depending on subject, for key articles. Databases that will primarily be focussed on are; Swetswise, Sciencedirect, Google Scholar, Cochrane and Medline. Journals within the ESO library will also be searched, using the library programme Alice. EBM is a very complex subject that creates big changes in approach for the whole healthcare system. Although some extreme views are eld, it is important to keep looking for the middle ground, as neither those who believe scientific research is the only way forward, nor those who rely on anecdotal experience alone, can actually claim to be doing the best for their patients. It is only by seeing the whole picture, and incorporating scientific evidence, patient values and clinical experience into a unity that progress will be made by manual therapists and doctors alike
