Abstract
This literature review is an investigation on the causes of Pregnancy-related Pelvic girdle Pain (PPP) based on both classic and modem osteopathic literature and scientific journals. It looks at the most recent theories on the causes of PPP as its etiology is still unclear and its mechanisms still not fully understood. But because PPP is a common complaint during pregnancy (around 45% of pregnant women suffer from it), a good understanding of PPP would allow osteopaths and other practitioners to provide patients with PPP with more appropriate and effective treatments. Therefore, it constitutes an important research priority. This dissertation offers a clinical presentation of PPP allowing the practitioners to have a better picture of PPP and how patients would present with it. Then, a critical review of the available theories is made and they are compared with the most recent scientific studies allowing a balanced overview of the evidence supporting the theories. An evaluation of the best diagnostic tools for PPP is also made as well as the most effective non-osteopathic treatments available. Then, an osteopathic plan for the treatment of patients with PPP is offered with considerations to the best posture to adopt during delivery. This dissertation will therefore allow a general overview and understanding of what Pregnancy-related Pelvic girdle Pain is, what the most likely causes are, how to diagnose it and which non-osteopathic treatments would be the most appropriate. And finally which osteopathic considerations to treatment and delivery positions
