Abstract
Background context: Based on current research of care-seeking behaviour, effectiveness of osteopathy in terms of functional and psychological outcomes are just as important, if not more, than other measures such as pain or range of motion. Objective: This review set out to explore the effects of osteopathy, and techniques from related professions, in terms of functional and psychological outcomes measured by the SF-36, RMDQ and FABQ questionnaires. Methodology: CINAHL, Medline and Science Direct databases were searched for research papers that studied the effects of osteopathy, osteopathic techniques or similar techniques from other professions, and used the SF-36, RMDQ and/or the FABQ questionnaires as outcome measures. The methodologies were assessed using both the Jadad and PEDro scoring methods. Technique descriptions used in the studies were compared and the effectiveness of the intervention was assessed by means of changes to the SF-36, RMDQ and FABQ scores. Results: This review found 15 articles suitable for review. Improvements were found in most studies in all outcome measures, however methodological quality varied and some results were inconclusive due to the study size and/or desigri. Conclusion: Clinical implications and suggestions are discussed This review found a lack of research on active techniques such as Muscle Energy Technique or Fascia! Unwinding that used functional or psychological outcome measures. More research is indicated in these fields. This review supports the use of the PEDro scoring method for assessing the methodological quality of manual therapies including osteopathy. Keywords: osteopathy, SF-36, RMDQ, FABQ, spinal manipulation, muscle energytechnique, fascia! unwinding,
