Abstract
Background Aims and Objectives: Stretches are prescribed to patients on a daily basis throughout the Osteopathic profession to help treat and manage various conditions as part of the treatment plan. This project investigated the benefits of stretching alongside exercise, to help decrease injury risk. The project was designed to reveal any possible contributing factors that may increase the likelihood of injuries sustained whilst exercising and whether or not stretching has a part to play in the prevention of injuries. The outcome of the project will aid the practitioner with more knowledge and advice on stretches to help supplement with various treatment plans. Looking at previous research there appears to be a lot of conflicting arguments and views regarding the beneficial aspects of stretching. Methodology: The present author designed a questionnaire, (350) of which were distributed within TRU GYM, Maidstone fitness centre to elicit information regarding stretching. The questionnaires were completed on entering the gym on set dates/times and the data then later statistically analysed. Results & Discussion: Results were obtained from 350 participants and inferential and descriptive statistical analysis was conducted. Of the questions asked and compared, the author found 75% of the hypotheses were accepted. This suggests that there are relevant factors contributing to injuries sustained. Inferential statistics were mostly valid, due to a high response rate aided by the data collection approach. Conclusions: The results show that stretching pre exercise can actually increase injury risk; this is amplified if the participant falls within certain categories ie exercise duration, gender, age and stretching style.
