Abstract
As ventouse delivery rates have risen in the past decades as well as Caesarean section rates leading to birth traumas and injuries that we don't always suspect, it is interesting to investigate today what could be those lesions and how osteopaths can help treating them, using structural as well as a cranial approach. Methods: The project was designed to determine first if ventouse delivery had specific consequences on the baby in terms of symptoms; secondly to see whether or not that type of delivery caused particular symptoms to be more common in the ventouse delivered population than in those delivered naturally. We also wanted to compare ventouse delivered babies with forceps and Caesarian delivered babies in terms of somatic and cranial lesions to see which birth process was the most traumatic. 150 postal questionnaires were sent to osteopaths who were known to work cranially and with infants, all over England. Results: Statistical analysis showed two main results: -Ventouse delivery does cause particular complaints to be more common in the ventouse population than in the unaided population. -Ventouse, forceps and Cesarean delivery do not lead to a specific pattern of cranial lesions during the infancy. The study gives an account of the anatomy of the neonate's cranium, give a description of the instrumental births and the Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM). A review of the literature was conducted to describe the current state of knowledge on the effects of ventouse and forceps delivery as well as Caesarean section and the conclusions of some of the recent research undertaken in this field are discussed.
