Abstract
The issue of understanding the determinants of patients' satisfaction has become essential within a healthcare system that has become "patient-centered". However, measuring satisfaction remains a difficult task. In this context, a group of researchers attempted to unveil what constituted patients' perception and satisfaction with treatment in an osteopathic training clinic ten years ago at Surrey Institute of Osteopathic Medicine. The present study comes as a complement of this former investigation, and aims at increasing the awareness of factors influencing patients' satisfaction with treatment in the ESO training clinic, taking nto account the additional number of regulations that have been put in operation since the original research. METHODOLOGY In order to achieve this, the present author opted for a qualitative approach, which seems adequate in view to investigate a social phenomenon. Using a convenience RESULTS The majority of participants expressed satisfaction with every aspect of their experience at the clinic, namely: health outcome, treatment, explanations, comfort. Three main themes were identified as major influences of satisfaction, namely: empathy, empowerment and competence. Coded related to lack of satisfaction were sparse and diverse. DISCUSSION The interpretation of the themes unveiled that patients of the ESO clinic valued a "patient-.centered" approach of care delivery, there they could be involved in a therapeutic relationship with their student practitioner. Issues relating to communication where highlighted and the understanding their conditions was highly valued by patients as a means to empower themselves. Although the present study comprises numerous limitations, its findings were very similar to those found ten years ago at SIOM and congruent with those related to patients expectations of osteopathic treatment in a qualitative tudy funded by the GOsC published in 2011. CONCLUSION Patients attending the ESO clinic seemed to enhance a biopsychosocial model of care delivery as a key to their satisfaction. This model is fully compatible with the Osteopathic philosophy which embraces a holistic perspective of patients, encouraging a reflection on the current osteopathic curriculum.
