Abstract
Research was undertaken to investigate the effects of a lumbar support on the soft tissues in the cervical spine, by measuring the tissue compliance of the levator scapulae muscles. Lumbar supports are used widely for the prevention and management of lower back pain in office based environments. However there is minimal research undertaken to see if lumbar supports have an effect on the cervical spine, hence why this investigation was undertaken. Forty male and female ESO students were involved in the study; they were randomly divided into two groups, the control group and the experimental group. Subjects were between 20-60 years of age. The participants were required to have no ongoing low back or neck pain, and no other type of spinal anomaly that could have affected the study. All participants were asked to sit down for a period of 5 minutes, whilst their levator scapulae muscles were measured at the initial sit, and again after 5 minutes. The control group had no lumbar support and the experimental group had a lumbar support. 7.The results were analysed using tonometer software package (2005), windows vista (excel) producing tabulated data to then use on SPSS, further evaluating the data, using the Kolmogorov-Smirnova and the Shapiro-Wilk test, to test for the normality of the data and then the Mann Whitney U test to find the significance of the data. The statistical analysis demonstrated that there was no overall significant difference between the two groups.Further studies using a bigger sample and better experimental conditions should improve the power of the study.
