Abstract
Aims: This survey investigates personality types among osteopathic students and professionals using a personality test based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI@). The aims were to discover that osteopaths share a common personality, most likely one of the four function pair personalities called Intuition-Feeling (NF) that is meant to excel in holistic medicine and also show the influence of osteopathic studies on personality. Method: A literature search was carried out by using Google scholar, Medline, Pubmed, Cinahl, Science direct and Swetswise. The Boolean logic was used with the following key words: osteopathy, personality types, MBTI, career, Carl Jung and free personality test. The questionnaire was set online, using Kwicksurvey to ask common questions, followed by a free personality test based on the MBTI@ provided by CareerPlanner Inc. The personality type's results were given under the form of a 4 letter code. The survey was sent to 1719 individuals through email addresses, with a response rate of 9.3%. Descriptive analysis and inferential statistics (contingency table) where used to analyse the results of 160 individuals. Results: The statistical analysis showed that osteopaths are 2.4 more likely to have one of the four osteopothic personolities. Osteopathic students and professionals have a common dominant personality which is INFP {Introversion-Intuition-Feeling- Perception) followed consecutively by ENFP {Extroversion-Intuition-Feeling-Perception). Both those personalities contain 33.8% of the participant population and 44% have the NF function pair. There is little difference between the personalities of students and professionals, which could indicate that osteopathic studies don't interfere and modify the core personality. Conclusion: This present study represents a pilot which would need to be done on a larger population in order to really comprehend the nature of an osteopathic personalitV. However, understanding those common traits could help and allow osteopathic institutions to assess potential students differently, support those who struggle and guide them through the course.
