Abstract
Aims and Objectives: This work was done to investigate how osteopathy is perceived, practised and training undertaken in Portugal within the community. The information collected via the use of this questionnaire can be used to enhance and develop inter- and intra professional relationships. Method: A questionnaire was sent out to Portuguese osteopaths via the Portuguese Federation of Osteopathy. There was a response rate of 43% (91/210). Descriptive and inferential statistics, using a chi-squared and fisher exact test were conducted to analyse the data. Effect size and power were also calculated when possible. Results: The main results indicated that Portuguese Osteopaths were well educated, used a broad spectrum of diagnostic tools, techniques and treatment approaches. Barriers for regulation included professional scepticism from the Portuguese Association of Medicine, competition for power within the profession and the lack of teamwork within and between the associations and federations. Discussion: There were clear patterns presented in the result section, which were presented in a discussive manor, for and against the following general hypothesis: Hl: There is a high standard in the training and practice of osteopaths in Portugal. Conclusion: The hypothesis was not testable, however arguments for and against the hypothesis presented allowed the author to accept the global hypothesis of the study
