Abstract
This survey is an investigation into a randomised set of Osteopathic patients' with respect to their attitudes and concepts of physical health; this with regards to possible psychological and emotional factors, associated/linked with individual management regimens. To critically analyse the underlying concepts of 'health' and possible management care for a sample group of Osteopathic patients and establish patient characteristics as possible predictors of attitude. Design and Methodology:_l00 questionnaires were completed and analysed using the Chi square test for distribution for assessment of probability of associations and/or linkage with emotional and/or somatic dysfunctions. Results:_The majority of patients (76%) showed awareness of the possible physical implications of psychological and emotional factors yet only 36% would be open to Discussion/Possible inferences:_ Given the raw data and the approximate two fold increase of awareness (76%) of possible psychological and emotional elements of physical pain in contrast to the only 36% of respondents stating that they would seek professional psychological help, raising patient's awareness of the implications of psychological and emotional factors on their health might be of benefit for their clinical management. Some interesting factors point to certain characteristics, such as age (below 46) and female gender, as well as having been addressed formally regarding this topic by a practitioner, increase the likelihood of patients showing amenability to address psycho-emotional elements as part of their management. Increased ability for recognition and clearer guidelines for referral could bolster and support the practitioner in their approach to the individual. Future Research_ A repeat study on a larger sample to investigate patient's attitudes and to clarify the implications in relation to the management of patients would elucidate further this study. Other aspects that should be addressed are practitioners' awareness of psychological and emotional barriers to recovery, their incorporation in everyday practice as well as the practitioner's protocol of referral.
