Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of an Osteopathic Upper cervical manipulation on the 2"d cervical vertebra and this effect on postural sway and balance. Ho. Osteopathic cervical Manipulation of C2/3 will have no immediate effect on postural sway. Hx. Osteopathic cervical manipulation of C2/3 will have an immediate decrease on postural sway. Design 40 subjects were studied in a randomised control and experiment grouped design. All subjects were students from the European School of Osteopathy and all data gathering performed within the experiment laboratory in the European School of Osteopathy. Subjects_ All subjects were volunteers between the 18-50 years old, with no history of any conditions affecting balance, they didn't have pain or treatment ongoing for a cervical spine issue and had all completed a safely questionnaire Method 20 Experimental group subjects received an Osteopathic Cervical Manipulation of their 2"d vertebra whilst the 20 Control group subject received no treatment. Prior to, and immediately after the osteopathic manipulation, the subject's COP was measured using a Kistler force plate and Biotype software. Results Results confirm that the null hypothesis that Osteopathic cervical manipulation of the 2nd cervical vertraba will have no immediate effect on postural sway. There was no significance between Experiment before and after the manipulation (P=0.85192) or the difference between Control and Experiment differences from before and after results (P=0.7353). Conclusion. The results of this research are inconclusive and would indicate that there was no change in sway following experiment suggesting that manipulation of the C2 apophyseal facet joint had no effect on balance, but shows that further research is needed.
