Abstract
Introduction: Research was conducted to explore the effect of carriage driving and if there was a significant association into the prevalence of CTS. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) has been listed since 2003 in the European Union's list of occupational diseases (Giersiepen, 2011). Method: Ethical approval to conduct the study was obtained from the ESQ Research Ethics Committee. Thirty participants were recruited. 15 female and 15 male carriage drivers aged 20-70 years Exclusion factors included previous incidence of wrist trauma any previous diagnosis of gout, which could adversely affect results. Participants were selected by incidental sampling during the carriage driving competition season; and completed a questionnaire providing details of their driving history and any report of CTs. Results:_ The investigation found no significant prevalence for CTS in the carriage driving population that participated. However out of 30 participants the majority of subjects experienced non specific wrist pain. Discussion: The Primary aim of the study was to assess each individual drivers experience and the effect this had on the prevalence of CTS amongst males and females. The global hypothesis (Hl) There is significance in the prevalence of CTS amongst male and female carriage drivers. Was found not to be significant. The results of this investigation indicated no significant difference in prevalence of CTS amongst a sample of 15 male and 15 female carriage Conclusion: Further research needs to be conducted in order to increase the power of the study. The main criticism of the study would be to increase sample size in order to gather a more diverse range of information regarding their any bodily discomfort; caused as a result of carriage driving. Various improvements have been mentioned upon how to further develop the questionnaire for additional data gathering in _Further work'
