Abstract
As human nutrition underwent a major shift, the increase of sedentary life style also led to the way to a new burden of morbid pathologies. While governments tirelessly try to counterbalance their incidence, causal relationships between diet and other chronic disorders such as auto-immune or rheumatoid conditions has yet to be established. As conventional medicine fails to find adequate treatments for these chronic pain sufferers, an increasing number of patients tum to alternative therapies to improve their quality of life. Due to the influence of nutrition on body function and the increased popularity of dietary therapies, manual therapists are bound to have to deal with nutrition related questions. Method A questionnaire was designed by the researcher, with the aim of investigating the characteristics and attitudes of a population using a dietary therapy. The survey was piloted, and sent out to a population of French chronic pain patients following Dr.Seignalet's "hypotoxic diet". Following the return of the questionnaires, the translation of a portion of the data was supervised by a bilingual colleague, and analysed using descriptive statistical methods for the quantitative data and thematic Resu/ts Descriptive analysis of the respondents shows that 78.1% are female, in their 40's or 50's, most often suffering from multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia or arthritides. They discovered the "hypotoxic diet" from their own effort, but 26.6% only comply to every aspect of it. The diet was followed for more than six months (78.I%), with a reported quality of life increasing proportionately to the time on the diet. 90% tried another medicine and 79.7% a manual therapy. Participants are mostly undecided towards a relationship between diet and manual therapies, and the statistical analysis also fails to establish a connection. Nine major themes were identified: Distrust in conventional medicine, diet as health empowerment, alteration in pathological process, diet and psychology, manual therapy as enhancement of diet, manual therapy as palliative solution, manual therapy effect on contributing factors, negative aspects of dietary therapy and negative aspects of manual therapy. Conclusions Dietary changes have a great affect on one's psychology, and the part taken by the placebo effect in the perceived benefits of a diet is very had to determine. However, when the changes are very-long lasting, alternative explanations for the symptomatic improvements are advanced, as the body of research tends to disqualify elimination diets as a viable solution in the treatments of chronic disorders. The paucity of research on manual therapies and their effect on chronic disorders may well reduce treatment expectation from the patient and also discount some treatment modalities, when manual therapies actually have the potential to play a key role in the management of multi-factorial disorders.
