Abstract
There is a plethora of information available in print and other media about osteopathy in general. Significantly less literature exists about intention in osteopathy and even less on experimental research of intention in osteopathy, The aim of the (current) study was to investigate the interpretation, transfer and perceived effect of intention within osteopathy and the treatment of patients. Method - In this tudy a convenience sample of six (female) osteopaths was interviewed {semi-structured) in a focus group, in their interpretation, experience and view of intention as a potential fundamental element in their practice of osteopathy. A literature search was conducted using the following key words within a Boolean Logic: osteopath* AND intention, manual therap* AND intention, osteopath* AND mind, osteopath* AND consciousness, osteopath* AND mental power, osteopath* AND attention. Intention AND therapy, intention healing, healing mind, power of intention, healing intention, osteopath* AND presence ANI) intent*. Osteopath* OR intention OR mind. Osteopath* OR consciousness OR mental power, osteopath* AND therapeutic intention, intention OR therapy, intention healing, healing intention, power of intention, healing intention, osteopath* OR presence AND intent*. Intention AND Physiotherapy, Intention AND complementary alternative medicine, Intention medicine, Energy medicine AND/OR intention, Intention AND manual therapy. Relevant results were discussed in the study and can be viewed in the references (see References). Mesh Terminology was used to define terms using Medical Subject Headings Browser 2012. The main databases used were: Sciverse, Swetswise, Medline, DOAJ, PubMed, Elsevier-Science Journals Collection, Chiropractic and Manual Therapies, Spine, JAOA, HOM, Wiley online Library, Springer, Philpapers (online research in philosophy), google books and google scholar search. Analysis and Discussion - After the focus group was transcribed and analysed common interpretations and experiences of intention in osteopathy emerged When asked questions from the topic guide each respondent had a unique interpretation of the meaning and potential effect of intention in relation to their personal treatment approach and experience in osteopathy. In its attempt to demystify the role of intention in osteopathy - osteopaths' beliefs and application, this study has illuminated a variety of viewpoints. By the majority of respondents, intention is revealed to be a high priority in the effective treatment of patients. Themes Thematic analysis of the data revealed four prominent themes: development perception, approach and concept. The findings are discussed alongside sub-themes and current research into intention: osteopathic and non-osteopathic. Conclusion The (current) study revealed that the majority of osteopaths in the focus group do regard intention to be essential in osteopathy, yet the definition and concept needs to be clarified before further studies are to be undertaken. It may be said that treatment was considered to be most beneficial when delivered by the osteopathic practitioner who maintains a reflective and evaluative practice in which intention is a distinct element. Therefore further research into how intention is utilised could aid in the universal understanding and application of intention as a skill in osteopathic practice.
