Abstract
Objective: To investigate and evaluate the expectations patients hold regarding verbal communication during a consultation with a student osteopath and clinic tutors at an osteopathic teaching clinic. Context: Changing nature of health care, patient.-centred Methodology: The present author designed a questionnaire, which was distributed during October and November 2011 at the European School of osteopathy teaching clinic to elicit patients' expectations regarding verbal communication with their student osteopath and clinic tutors. This research was undertaken via the analysis of primary data collected through the use of a questionnaire. Results and discussion: Results were obtained from 99 participants and mainly descriptive statistical analysis was conducted. This identified the aspects of verbal communication, which respondents deemed to be of greatest importance during a consultation at an osteopathic teaching clinic. These included information on risks and side effects, detailed case history taking, exploring the patient's life circumstances, honesty in diagnosis delivered in language that is easy to understand and explanation of benefits of self'-help. Inferential statistics using the chi'-squared test were mostly invalid, predominantly due to small sample size. Conclusion: Being aware of patients' priorities in terms of verbal communication will ensure quality of care, strengthen the patient'-practitioner relationship and enhance treatment.
