Abstract
Background: The introduction of interprofessional education as part of healthcare professionals training to enhance interprofessional practice has become an important objective internationally. UK osteopathic students have limited interprofessional opportunities, despite interprofessionalism is part of the Osteopathic Practice Standards, and little literature is available on the perceptions of interprofessional relationships amongst UK osteopathic students. Objectives: This study investigated on the perceptions of interprofessional relationships amongst undergraduate osteopathic students within the UK and the associations between the results with the different demographics such as age, gender, year level, degree partly completed in another school, and previous experience as a healthcare practitioner. Design: Cross-sectional questionnaire study Method: Students from three schools were invited to participate to an online questionnaire about participants’ demographics and the adapted version of the Interdisciplinary Perception Scale (IEPS), an 18-item questionnaire using a 6-point Likert-type scale measuring the level of agreement with statements based on four factors. Results: 125 questionnaires were analysed (response rate of 32%), and the largest proportion of respondents were from the European School of Osteopathy. The IEPS total mean score was 234.85 and the lowest scores were found for factor 4 “Understanding of Others’ Values”, and items in relation to self-perception trough other professionals’ eyes. Some statistically significant associations between demographics and individual items revealed a decrease in score related to older population, students in their final year, and people with previous experience as healthcare practitioner. Discussion: The total score is relatively high, yet quite low on the spectrum of results found when comparing with other studies available. Furthermore, understanding of others’ value has also shown to be poor in other professions, but the significant associations found with the demographics were inconsistent with those observed in other studies. However, a replication of the study including a bigger sample may provide more objective evidence of every assumptions made. Conclusion: UK osteopathic students have relatively positive perceptions of interprofessional relationships. Yet, some weaknesses were highlighted, and room for improvement was revealed when put in perspective with other studies. The participants’ variables demonstrated some associations with individual items from the IEPS, which were somewhat unique to the present paper.
