The purpose of this study is to verify and to quantify the role of the masseters jerk on the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) opening restriction in the sagittal plane.
In a quasi-experimental study without control group, on a 70-individual sample, after diagnosing the masseter spasm with the help of the trigger points, the maximum comfortable mouth opening was measured. The muscular disfunction was treated with a soft tissues osteopathic technique: trigger points release by ischemic compression. Once the technique was applied, measurements were taken at 0,3,5,8,10,12,15 and 20 minutes. The technique was effective (p< 0,001) and an increase of the opening was observed along the intervals, whereas no significant increase was observed between the intervals 10-12 and 12-15 minutes (p 0, 08).
Also, it was observed that time played an important role on the masseter muscles response to the trigger points release by ischemic compression technique, with the main increase of the mean being produced between 3-5 and 5-8 minutes intervals, whereas 40% of the individuals showed negative increase values or under 1 mm.
Results confirm that the masseter jerk produce a restricted opening of the TMJ and the restriction's quantification absolute values are a function of the initial pre-test values of each individual. - Abstract

El propósito de este estudio es comprobar y cuantificar el papel que desempeña el espasmo de los maseteros en la limitación de la apertura en el plano sagital de la Articulación Temporo-Mandibular (ATM).
En un estudio casi-experimental sin grupo control, sobre una población de 70 individuos, tras diagnosticar el espasmo de los maseteros con la ayuda del diagnostico de puntos gatillos, se midió la apertura cómoda máxima de la boca.
Se trató la disfunción muscular con una técnica osteopática de tejidos blandos: la compresión isquémica.
Una vez finalizada la técnica se hicieron mediciones a los 0, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12,15, y 20 minutos.
La técnica resultó ser efectiva (p< 0,001) y apareció un incremento de la apertura a lo largo de los intervalos, no siendo significativo el incremento entre los intervalos 10-12 y 12-15 minutos (p > 0,08).
Así mismo, se observó que el tiempo jugaba un papel importante en la respuesta del músculo masetero a la técnica de compresión isquémica de los puntos gatillos, produciéndose el mayor incremento de la media entre los intervalos 3-5 y 5-8 minutos, encontrándose sin embargo, en el intervalo 0-3 minutos, un porcentaje del 40% de la población con valores de incremento negativos o por debajo de 1 mm.
Los resultados obtenidos, confirman que los maseteros producen una limitación de la apertura de la ATM, y que los valores absolutos de la cuantificación de la limitación, están en función de los valores iniciales preintervención de cada sujeto. - presented at
